Webinar on Readmission After CABG

Thursday, June 23, 2016

In this STS-sponsored webinar, an expert panel of speakers presents on a broad spectrum of issues regarding readmission following cardiac surgery in general, and coronary bypass surgery in particular. Gaetano Paone of Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, moderates, and the panelists include David Shahian of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts; Frank Shannon of William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan; Kevin Lobdell of Singer Heart and Vascular Institute; and William Caine of Intermountain Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. The panel discusses the role of the U.S. federal government in reimbursement policy and the potential for unintended negative consequences, as well as controversies related to difficulties in adequately estimating expected rates of readmission and defining what constitutes excessive or unnecessary readmission. With the most current 30-day readmission rate in the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database at approximately 10%, the panel also presents timely information on the most common causes of readmission after CABG and practical approaches to reducing their frequency.
