Obituary
John Parker CBE
I am sure that all the UK members of the Society will know that
John Parker died of a brain tumour just after he should have taken
office as President but it is possible that some of our overseas members
may not have heard this. His influence on and contribution to cardiac
surgery and cardiology was enormous. Southwark Cathedral was full for
his memorial service, just one indicator of the respect he commanded.
As a small token of appreciation the Society will be awarding
The John Parker Medal for the best poster presentation each year at
the annual meeting. Many will remember John's stimulating chairmanship
of these sessions, often thought to be the highlight of the meeting.
When I was appointed as Secretary Geoff Smith told me that if ever
there was an issue of any potential importance you could guarantee
getting a letter from John even if no-one else had spotted the problem.
He was right and John will be sorely missed. We all send our deepest
sympathy to Niki and their children.
