3rd Annual STS Database Managers Meeting
“The STS National Databases: Present & Future”



To: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Data Managers


On behalf of the STS National Database Committee, I would like to extend a personal invitation to attend the 3rd Annual STS Database Managers Meeting in San Antonio, Texas on January 24th. (See link to the meeting Registration Form).

As you are aware, from The Society’s previous communications, this is a time of transformation and excitement for the STS and its National Database. We plan to cover how this change will effect you as a Datamanager. Some of the items will include a review of a new and smaller data set, improved software specifications, new data collection tool and much more.

The Duke Clinical Research Institute(DCRI) will be in attendance as the new data warehousing facility for the National Databases. DCRI is an academic research organization with a background in outcomes reporting in cardiovascular diseases. They will review with the Data Managers the exciting features that will be made available with respect to data warehousing and a standard approach to harvesting.

Another critical area, “Data Conversion”, is a concern all participant sites have. Dr. Stan Dziuban will discuss in detail the rational behind data conversion, preparing your data for harvest and the affects on participation in the first DCRI data harvest.

Finally, The Society is offering to each vendor (either certified or nearing certification) space in our Exhibit Hall at the time of the meeting. Each of you will have the opportunity to view software products from each of these companies. We feel the information you gain from each vendor will be invaluable in assisting you and your group in the process of choosing the certified vendor that is right for you.

The Society values the contribution that you, as a Data Manager, make to the National Database and recognizes the importance of your vital role. We feel this meeting is an excellent opportunity for you to hear “first hand” about all the exciting changes within The Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Databases.

Also being presented this year will be a meeting for those datamangers who have or are considering developing a “regional” Datamanager group within your area. This meeting will be held in the afternoon of Saturday the 23 of January. If you would like to attend the meeting regarding regional Datamanager activity please notify my office.
