University of Washington Research
Research is a major focus at the University of Washington. Last year the University of Washington received more than $600 million in public and private grant and contract support for research. In fact, since 1969 the University of Washington has ranked among the top five institutions in the nation in receipt of federal awards. Further, since 1974 it has been the number one public university in America in receiving federal support for research and training. Federal agencies provide nearly 80 percent of the University's grant and contract support. Thus the University of Washington is a fertile collaborative research environment. Likewise, research is important in the mission of the Department of Surgery. Last year there were a total of 143 grants, of which 21 were NIH-funded. The National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army and Navy, and other federal and non-federal sources funded the remainder of grants. Many of the projects throughout the University and Department relate to vascular biology, inflammation, bioengineering and gene therapy.

Basic Science Research in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Within this fertile environment, research, at the clinical and basic science level, is a critical initiative in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Washington. There are two closely allied research initiatives in the Division of Cardiothoracic surgery. The Cardiovascular Surgery Research laboratory is under the direction of Dr. Edward Verrier, in collaboration with Dr. Timothy Pohlman, and a pulmonary vascular/transplant section under the direction of Dr. Michael Mulligan. At the basic science level, these two labs work in close collaboration. The labs are physically in proximity, and laboratory meetings, conferences, and other activities are shared between them.
