The 37th Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons will take place Monday, January 29 - Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. This important event is not to be missed! It promises to be one of most varied educational programs ever to be offered by the Society.

Meeting Highlights

The Annual Meeting is filled with important, informative educational opportunities.

• Tennessee Senator William H. Frist is this year’s Thomas B. Ferguson Lecturer. He will present “White Hats and White Coats: Why Physicians are Uniquely Qualified for Public Service.” The 2001 Ferguson Lecture is supported by the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education through a generous grant from Medtronic, Inc.
• The Professional Affairs Symposium will take place on Tuesday morning.
• The Ralph Alley Lecture, funded by an educational grant from the Cardiothoracic Research and Education Foundation of Spartanburg, South Carolina, will feature a presentation by William R. Brody of Baltimore.
• John R. Benfield of Sacramento, California, will give a lecture on “Publishing and Presenting in English: For Surgeons from Non-English Countries on Monday morning.”

In addition to the educational opportunities and scientific presentations, the Meeting offers attendees the opportunity to gather and network with peers. On Tuesday evening, all members and their guests are invited to the Meeting Reception, “Welcome to Our Home.” Held in historic Generations Hall, this reception will feature local fare and entertainment.

Meeting attendees are also encouraged to attend an informal informational meeting for the Harvard Program on Tuesday evening. This program uses a variety of nontraditional approaches to affect change in the current medical system and to more effectively accomplish the goal of improving the delivery of care to patients.

For accompanying guests, STS will be offering a variety of optional tours. Guests can make the most of their trip to New Orleans by participating in these wonderful programs that will take place during meeting hours:

• Full-day tour of the Gulf Coast
• Breakfast and morning tour through the Garden District
• Morning visit to the New Orleans Museum of Art
• Afternoon swamp boat tour
• Midday cooking demonstration and lunch with acclaimed chef Rene Bajeaux
