Cardio-thoracic Surgery
has entered the EU structure

News from the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists)

A new, separate Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery has been approved by the Board of the UEMS at its meeting in October.  This establishes Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery within an Independent Specialist “Section” for the first time and is the culmination of several years’ efforts by the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons under Hans Huysmans.  It is called the Section of “Cardiothoracic Surgery” to comply with EU terminology.

Urgent tasks now are:

  • to establish a Management Council (and later an Executive Committee) for the Section. This is done through the National Medical associations upon request from UEMS. The National Medical Association will normally consult the Specialist association(s) of each country.

  • to establish separate Divisions of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery within the Section of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

  • A separate application to create a Division of Thoracic Surgery within the Section of Surgery (not an independent Specialist Section) was also approved by the UEMS Board.  This decision was not supported by the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (representing EACTS, ESTS and ESCVS) and presents some complications. However, we foresee, that the Executive Committee and Management Council for the new Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery will work in cooperation with this other Division of Thoracic Surgery for the good of the Specialty.

The decision is very important for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and its future as we are now accepted as equal members in the family of Medical Specialists.
