What is Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery?
Medtronic’s Cardiac Surgery Division has had numerous discussions surrounding the definition of “minimally invasive cardiac surgery” (MICS), simply due to the nature of it’s broad and diverse product line. From our perspective, the definition may involve reducing the size of the incision or elimination of an incision, optimized, or absence of, cardiopulmonary bypass, reduced procedure time and shortened length of stay, decreased morbidity or other variables. If we’re looking for a term to encompass all dimensions, MICS may not be broad enough. Perhaps “less traumatic”, “superior cardiac surgery” or “competitive cardiac surgery” should be terms coined to cover all dimensions of MICS.
Medtronic, on a whole, has a mission to provide the greatest possible reliability and quality in our technologies. As MICS surges forward, striving for the best outcomes for the largest numbers of patients is important. As an industry partner, we are committed to working closely with our customers in order to develop, and introduce to the market, those technologies that meet both the patient and surgeon demand.
The great news is that many of the advanced techniques and technologies required to strengthen cardiac surgery, such as endoscopic access and robotics, for example, are available today to those surgeons willing to embrace them! The next step must be cardiac surgeons telling this story to the world while sending the message that a cardiac surgeon can perform MICS procedures.
