Dear Colleagues,
Is Cardiothoracic Surgery under threat ?
No, if surgeons understand that they have to re-invest in their exciting profession, that is to say attract investment money from the industry to obtain New Technologies and make an important personal investment to find implementation in New Techniques.
Implementing New Technology involves going through the difficult process of procedural development - ie., to create new techniques so that patients benefit from the new technology. This is difficult, as we are not permitted to present additional risk or suboptimal quality. On the other hand: it offers a huge opportunity: The biggest risk is probably not taking one!
We have pleasure in announcing that the 2004 Techno-College of EACTS/ESTS - the forum for new technology - which will be held on 11 September in one of Germany's premier convention centres - Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) - itself a symbol of high technology and quality. Live Surgery from the Cardiac Centre at Leipzig University will enlighten your insight into some new procedures.
- The Role of the Cardiac Surgeon in Stem Cells
- Endoscopic A-Fib Treatment
- New Concepts for Myocardial Revascularisation
- New Concepts for the Treatment of Valvular Disease especially the future of Aortic Valve Surgery
There are also exciting fields for the thoracic surgeon:
- Robotic Surgery of the Lung and Mediastinum
- Endoluminal Procedures in the Esophagus/Trachea
- Modern Treatment of Pulmonary Metastasis
The best way to predict the future is to invent it!
Make sure that the 2004 Techno-College in Leipzig on 11 September is marked in your diaries. This year's programme will incorporate an invited presentation from the industry which will comment upon the difficult process of implementing new technology in daily procedures to ensure a better quality final product. Last, but not least, 11 September is a very evocative day and we will invite a special guest as a tribute to our American friends.
