Bio-Pump ® Plus Centrifugal Blood Pump

The Medtronic Bio-Pump ® Plus centrifugal blood pump, available with optional Carmeda ® BioActive Surface or Trillium ® Biosurface, uses the strained forced-vortex pumping principle in which a series of smooth-surfaced rotating cones pull the blood into the vortex created by the rotation.

As the blood flows toward the pump outlet, the air handling vortex energy created by these cones transfers to the blood in the form of pressure and velocity. The Bio-Pump® Plus pump is constructed from molded polycarbonate parts and features a double-lip seal design over precision bearings for optimum strength, robust construction, and dependability.

The non-occlusive design of the Medtronic Bio-Pump® Plus promotes laminar flow, improving blood handling capabilities and decreasing blood trauma often associated with extracorporeal circulatory support experienced with cardiopulmonary bypass.2 The Bio-Pump® Plus centrifugal pump couples with the Medtronic Bio-Console® Pump System which includes speed control, flow and pressure measurement and associated alarm functions.

Through the skilled application of Computational Flow Dynamics (CFD), the Bio-Pump® Plus pump's proven design has been enhanced to optimize blood flow with the refinement of a patented Vertical Cutwater Outlet design which has reduced outlet shear and reduced hemolysis by 20% from our original, industry-standard, (Bio-Pump) design1. In addition, the latest Bio-Pump® Plus features even more robust polycarbonate construction, enhanced double-lip seal bearing design, and special impact absorbing packaging for Custom Tubing Packs to provide the reliability you expect from Medtronic.

GENTLE BLOOD HANDLING2

  • Decreased platelet activation and better platelet preservation
  • Reduced complement activation
  • Reduced use of blood products
  • Patented Vertical Cutwater Outlet Design, (when compared to former, standard-setting design) -Reduces shear in the cutwater region
    -Reduces hemolysis by 20% overall

REDUCED POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS2

  • Decreased pulmonary complications
  • Less microemboli generation
  • Reduced neurological deficits
  • Meta-analysis confirms improved clinical outcomes and lower overall patient costs

HIGH MARGIN OF SAFETY

  • Smooth vortex cone design provides superior micro air retention3 when compared to impeller centrifugal pump designs. Recent in-house testing indicates a ten times greater air retention 6 l/mn.1 Effective air retention means less air passes through the pump outlet and downstream towards the patient
  • Flow ceases with draining of venous reservoir preventing passage of gross air thanks to pre-load sensitivity
  • Pressure sensitivity greatly reduces the risk of tubing circuit disruption, providing greater patient safety, and perfusion peace of mind
  • Pressure sensitivity also allows more gradual, physiological response to pressure changes

PROVEN RELIABILITY

  • Robust double-lip seal design adds sealing integrity, reduces air volume in bearing chamber and resists moisture ingress
  • Polycarbonate outer housing and inlet/outlet ports provide increased strength and resistance to alcohol and other chemicals to minimize risk of breakage
