Tracheal Disease References

Selected Articles

Mansour KA, Lee RB, Miller JI Jr. Tracheal resections: Lessons learned. Annals of Thoracic Surgery 1994 57(5):1120-5.
The authors' review of their series of 38 patients allows them to make several recommendations. CT scanning is very informative, proper mobilization allows primary anastomosis in almost all resections, and five-year survival is good.

Kelly JP, Webb WR, Moulder PV, Everson C, Burch BH, Lindsey ES. Management of airway trauma. I: Tracheobronchial injuries. Annals of Thoracic Surgery 1985 40(6):551-5.

The overwhelming majority of patients in this series had penetrating trauma and all had signs of airway compromise on arrival. Hemoptysis may be absent in serious injury and patients must be evaluated for esophageal and abdominal injuries as well.

Kelly JP, Webb WR, Moulder PV, Moustouakas NM, Lirtzman M. Management of airway trauma. II: Combined injuries of the trachea and esophagus. Annals of Thoracic Surgery 1987 43(2):160-3.

These patients also had a preponderance of penetrating injuries; the authors prefer bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy for evaluation. These patients often have associated thoracic injuries.

Grillo HC, Zannini P, Michelassi F. Complications of tracheal reconstruction. Incidence, treatment and prevention. Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery 1986 91(3):322-8.

An excellent series of over 500 patients. The authors compare their early and late experience with tracheal reconstruction and discuss methods to reduce complications.
