New Horizons in Cardiothoracic Surgery

By Walter H. Merrill, MD

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has taken a leadership role by responding to many of the current problems facing cardiothoracic surgeons. As part of this response the Society established several Workforces, one of which is the Workforce on Graduate Medical Education. This group has been charged, in part, with “generating interest in cardiothoracic surgery among medical students and residents.” This objective is especially important as the Society is aware of the potential future shortage of cardiothoracic surgeons.

The Workforce on Graduate Medical Education proposes to ask established leaders in our field to write opinion pieces concerning the value and satisfaction of a career in cardiothoracic surgery. It is our goal that these personal reflections would be published on CTSNet.
