The United Kingdom Thoracic Surgical Register |
1999-2000 Annual Report in Excel format |
This register collects activity and mortality data on lung and oesphageal (gullet) surgery conducted in all thoracic surgical units in the UK. Some of this activity is undertaken by general surgeons, but there is no comparative audit. |

The United Kingdom Cardiac Surgical Register |
The UK Cardiac Surgical Register was established in 1977 and collects annual cardiac surgical activity and mortality data from each NHS cardiothoracic surgical unit. The data includes:
The data excludes all patients operated within the private sector. |
Summary data since 1977 |
Unit specific results for coronary surgery for the financial years 1998/9 to 1999/2000 |

The National Adult Cardiac Surgical Database |
The Society recommends that at the minimum this data is collected on all patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The dataset is currently undergoing harmonisation with other similar datasets. |
The definitions are internationally agreed. It is this agreement that will enable international comparisons in performance |
This was the first report of the pilot national database study. It outlines the responsibilities of different parties in data collection |

1999-2000 Report (PDF) |
The 160 page report documents the changing trends and steadily improving outcomes following major operations for heart disease and shows:
Despite this worsening patient population the overall operative mortality of 2-3% for coronary surgery has remained static over the last decade because the operative mortality for older patients, emergency patients, repeat operations, diabetics and patients with generalised vascular disease has steadily fallen. The previously unexplained higher operative mortality for women may be related to the smaller size of their hearts |

All contributors to the database can request access to the data for analysis and presentation |

Most of the graphs in the 1999-2000 report have been made into powerpoint slides for free use in presentations. |

United Kingdom Heart Valve Registry |
the UK Heart Valve Registry was established in 1986 to collect details of patients undergoing heart valve replacement. The registry is linked to the Office of National Statistics for long term follow up. |

The Central Cardiac Audit Database |
The CCAD is a joint project between this Society, cardiologists and the Department of Health to try to standardise the collection of information collected on patients with heart disease. |
One of the first areas tackled by CCAD was the collection of data on children with heart disease because our secetion on congenital heart disease in the UK Cardiac Surgica Register had become completely outdated making it somewhat unreliable and of very little use. This is a joint report between the British Paediatric Cardiac Association (BPCA) on paediatric cardiac interventions with mortality tracking through the Office of National Statistics. This is a pdf document and will take about 2 minutes to download |

| Heart and Lung Transplantation in the UK | |
| Royal College of Surgeons Audit of Intrathoracic Organ Transplantation | The National Audit of Intrathoracic Transplantation was established in 1995 to monitor the outcomes of cardiopulmonary transplantation in the UK. The audit is funded by the National Specialist Commissioning Advisory Group (NSCAG) at the Department of Health, through the Royal College of Surgeon's Clinical Effectiveness Unit. |
