Monthly Newsletter - JuLY 2006
“The contribution this month by Komanapalli and colleagues ushers in new additions to the CTSNet Thoracic Portal. One year ago the Thoracic Portal was piloted as a template for presenting clinical information to the readers of CTSNet, enhancing their ability to obtain information relevant to a subspecialty in cardiothoracic surgery without having to wade through the enormous amount of information contained on CTSNet. Similar portals are under construction for adult cardiac and congenital heart surgery.
The areas of interest that were originally defined for the Thoracic Portal included experts’ techniques, the literature watch, clinical trials, and basic science topics. A comprehensive list of thoracic surgery clinical trials now appears in the Thoracic Portal, thanks to the enduring efforts of Drs. David Johnstone and Robert Downey. This section will be updated annually, and will provide practitioners with an up-to-date and reliable source of information about current clinical research. Content is still being developed for the basic science section.
A new area of interest that has been developed for the Thoracic Portal is the clinical Case of the Month. This consolidates the current case presentation formats on CTSNet, found mostly under Clinical Cases, which were previously ably collected and edited by Vinod H. Thourani, MD. The development of a Case of the Month forum within the Thoracic Portal will further brand clinical information on CTSNet with respect to its constituent subspecialty interests.
Mithran S. Sukumar, MD, has been appointed as Associate Editor for the Case of the Month presentations within the Thoracic Portal. He would like to encourage residents and practicing surgeons to submit appropriate cases for this area. Reports should focus on interesting or unique individual problems that would be of interest to the general readership of CTSNet. The use of graphics and videos is strongly encouraged. Please address any questions or send contributions to Dr. Sukumar.
In addition to the newly formatted Case of the Month section, the Thoracic Portal will now have a monthly survey. This is designed to obtain feedback on the current content of the Thoracic Portal, to identify needs and desires of the readership, and to informally describe current practice patterns in general thoracic surgery. Each survey will be posted for a month to permit interested individuals to participate. Results of the survey will be available within 6 weeks of posting, and the results will be archived for future reference. Our hope is that everyone who visits the Thoracic Portal will participate in the polls, which may provide great insight into shifting practice patterns and will help us design the portal to optimize the reader’s on line experience. Members are encouraged to submit ideas for surveys.”

CALLING 500 TRANSPLANT PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS!
The most successful donation service areas (DSAs) in the country are transplanting more than 3.5 organs per donor. If your DSA isn’t meeting this target you can get involved now.
On October 18-19, 2006 the Organ Transplantation Breakthrough Collaborative (OTBC) National Learning Congress will convene in New Orleans, Louisiana. The OTBC was created to maximize the number of organs transplanted from each donor and to raise the national rate from 3.06 to 3.75. Achieving this goal requires the active involvement of transplant physicians and surgeons throughout the country. The Collaborative is challenging 500 transplant physicians and surgeons to attend a special symposium on October 19th developed specifically to address their role in procuring and utilizing more organs. This one-day meeting will partner transplant physicians with local and national donor hospital intensivists, OPO directors, and coordinators to maximize utilization of hearts and lungs from heart beating and non-heartbeating donors.
The Breakthrough Collaboratives have generated an unparalleled track record of success in increasing the number of organ donors, including back-to-back months with donors in excess of 700 per month. With your active involvement, these same successful results can be generated for the number of organ transplants performed.
The 2nd National Learning Congress website will go live on August 15th. You will find meeting and hotel registration information here. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact Sydney Soschin at 703-889-9032 or via e-mail.

Thoracic Case Report
Blogs on CTSNet are thriving. We recommend the cogent comments of Tom Treasure, FRCS, London UK. Mr. Treasure is the 2005-2006 President of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
Unsure whether blogs can provide meaty discourse? Explore the CTSNet Blogs. Founded by initial postings from Drs. Bob Replogle and Tom Treasure, the CTSNet blogs apply a surgeon’s perspective to other cutting issues of the day, whether in cardiothoracic surgery or what’s happening in the news. Consider Replogle’s stimulating perspectives on global warming and science in the public interest. Or Treasures thoughtful essay on the imperative need to balance evidence and personal experience in deciding what is best for patients. Dr. Eric Lim provides another perspective to the discussion in a recent posting. He argues that new or state-of-the-art is not necessarily better and that proven efficacy must be the primary reason behind any decision, especially regarding minimal access surgery. Then consider Dr. Luis Quinonez’s experiences as a Fellow a! t the Mayo Clinic and read about the important lessons learned regarding practice and patients in developing a culture of service. Or take in Michael Neuvirth and see how a patient appreciates a culture of service. There is something for everyone in the CTSNet blogs. Return often. Additional blogs are coming soon.
Humanitarian heroes – new feature

Watch for additional articles honoring others working in humanitarian fields as they appear approximately every 6 weeks.

WORKSHOP ON INTEGRATED CORONARY REVASCULARIZATION
The 3rd WORKSHOP ON INTEGRATED CORONARY REVASCULARIZATION will be held 6-8 December, 2006 in Innsbruck, Austria.
Our earlier workshops showed that combined coronary intervention carried out by interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in direct cooperation is a realistic option. It was demonstrated that a team approach that also includes cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiac imaging specialists, perfusionists and cardiac nursing specialists is critical for offering the best therapeutic options to patients with coronary artery disease.
We kindly invite all colleagues interested in integrated approaches to treatment of coronary artery disease to our 3rd workshop and strongly encourage attendance of coronary revascularization teams.
Formation and maintenance of such teams will be the main topic of the 2006 meeting. A distinguished national and international faculty will lead attendees through new ways of cooperation between specialties working on invasive treatment of coronary artery disease. The official language of the workshop is English.
Please find detailed workshop information on the congress website
