Dear CTSNet Member,

CTSNet Gets a Face Lift!

We are  thrilled to launch a new look for CTSNet, the largest CT surgery portal in the  world.  The new design is intended to help you find content faster, and to  help us integrate content better.  This makeover is a work-in-progress, so  you can expect more changes in the months to come.  We will highlight new  features in upcoming newsletters.  For example, here are some important  things to know:

The website is set up so you can access links in the  banner and the left menu throughout the site.  This will help you move  around more readily.  The center part of each page is where you will find  new content and important announcements.  The far right column is where you  will find links to related content or other materials.

The CTSNet home  page is designed to help you find new content quickly.  The four most  recent "headlines" are posted at the top.  As announcements are added,  older announcements will spill over to the "More Headlines" page.  The rest  of the home page includes quick links to content deeper into the site.

CTSNet Redesign Notes:  Looking for the PubMed link?  No  worries.  In the left menu of the CTSNet.org website, click on the Journals  link.  That will take you to the Journals page, where you will find the  PubMed link in the Journal Resources box in the right  column.

RESIDENTS  SECTION

The seventh Pioneer Interview has been posted.  Dr. Rainer  interviews Dr. Charles Hufnagel, pioneer in prosthetic aortic valve  design.  Access at:

http://www.ctsnet.org/sections/residents/pioneerinterviews/article-7.html

The Thoracic Surgery Residency at the Hospital of the  University of Pennsylvania has always been committed to training leaders in both  Cardiac and General Thoracic Surgery.  To reflect trends in our field, as  of the current NRMP match cycle we will be matching two separate positions, one  in Cardiac Surgery and one in General Thoracic Surgery.  This is a change  from our previous situation by which two residents were matched to  "cardiothoracic surgery" without a specified track.

It is anticipated  that the candidate who matches to the General Thoracic Track position will spend  14 months in General Thoracic rotations, 6-8 months in Adult Cardiac rotations,  and 2-4 months in Pediatric Cardiac rotations.

DISCUSSION  FORUMS

Interesting discussion threads are developing in 2  areas:

(1) On oversupply of physicians, in the In My Opinion  forum:

http://www.ctsnet.org/fusetalk/messageview.cfm?catid=83&threadid=20000910

(2) On integrated 6-year residencies, in the Resident  forum:

http://www.ctsnet.org/fusetalk/messageview.cfm?catid=14&threadid=15000874

In the Resident Forum and speaking of the job situation,  Editor Vinod Thourani had this to say:

"There is no doubt that there  remains concern among general surgery residents, cardiothoracic surgical  residents, and program directors regarding the job status in cardiac  surgery.  I wanted to equate with you some of my experiences.  I will  be finishing 11 years of training this summer and have secured an Assistant  Professor spot at my home institution of Emory University with Dr. Robert  Guyton.  I did not look at any private practice jobs, but there were many  available to me (along to my 2 co-chief residents).

My overall  experience is that the jobs are there!!!  However, there are a few  caveats.  The academic jobs are very hard to acquire and probably will be  for the next 1-3 years.  After that, the thought is that these will also  open up.  There are plenty of private practice jobs.  The difference  is that the conditions for these jobs have changed.  There may be more  years to partnership, more hospitals you will operate at; they may require you  do thoracic and vascular (in addition to cardiac), or they may want you to come  with a niche (extra year of vascular endostenting or minimally invasive cardiac  or thoracic training).  Although I do not think we will be doing coronary  stenting, I do think that we will be doing hybrid coronary revascularization.

Overall, I think the future for cardiac surgery remains extremely  bright.  Cardiac surgeons, as a group of physicians, are very industrious  and innovative, and I invite you whole-heartedly to our profession.  As we  re-invent ourselves and our profession, I think you will find that quite to the  contrary, cardiac surgery will become even more dynamic in the next 10  years."

MEMBER  SECTION

We thank all those members who have sent your photos for posting  on your home page.  It does make such a difference when curious  fellow-members can eyeball you.  For those who have not yet done so, we  urge you to send a photograph soon.  We prefer a jpeg file attached to an  e-mail, but will accept other types (bitmap, gif).  Or simply send us a  wallet-sized glossy print to the address below.

Update your home page  periodically.  The tool is very simple to use.  When others are  curious enough about you to go to the member list and click on your home page,  they are disappointed when there is no picture, and the page is largely  blank.  You have had that same experience, and so know what we are talking  about.  See http://www.ctsnet.org/sections/members/index.html

CTSNet will have a booth at the upcoming SOCIETY OF  CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEONS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND (SCTS) Annual Meeting in  London, UK, March 5-8, 2005.  If you are there, please stop  by.
