You have before you the first in a series of monthly Newsletters, in which we will bring to your attention items of current interest on the website, as well as important announcements of upcoming events. Member organizations have been encouraged to submit items about their activities they wish to make known to the CTSNet readership at large. Individual members are also invited to send items appropriate for wide distribution. The broad purpose of this Newsletter, as with many features on CTSNet, is to save time for the busy cardiothoracic surgeons that comprise our membership. Send your items for inclusion in the October issue to the address below by October 7th. Also, let us know if you like this Newsletter, and what changes or suggestions you have for future issues.

The Annual Meeting of The European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery (EACTS) is less than two weeks away. The meeting is to be held in Monte Carlo September 22-25, 2002. The final program is available for viewing on the EACTS website at http://www.eacts.org/. Professor Marko Turina of Zurich will give his Presidential Address on September 23rd at 12:00 Noon entitled "EACTS-Carrying the Torch."

The Junior Committee of EACTS is pleased to invite all trainees to the Annual EACTS Trainees' Meeting and Evening Reception, which will take place in the Grimaldi Forum on Sunday, September 22nd at 18:45. Please see http://www.ctsnet.org/doc/6642 for full details of this event.

All four September CTSNet Journals are now available for viewing. Also, on the expanded Journals home page at http://www.ctsnet.org/journals/ links to many other cardiovascular journals, as well as journals of general medical interest, are accessible.

All interested physicians are invited to attend the Second International Cardiac Outreach Conference to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, October 19, 2002. The purpose is to convene a group of experts who are interested in exploring more effective ways to distribute health care throughout the world. The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australasian Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons (ASCTS) will be held at the Noosa Resort, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, October 22-27, 2002. Further details can be obtained at asctsasm2002@tayloredimages.com.au

The Fourth Triennial Brigham Cardiac Valve Symposium will be held at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel October 23-25 in Boston. For more information get in touch with the Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education at hms-cme@hms.harvard.edu.

The Annual Meeting of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland will be held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Edinburgh, Scotland, March 16-19, 2003. Abstracts can be submitted until midnight, November 5, 2002 via the SCTS website at http://www.scts.org. Details of abstract submission will be posted soon. Watch for them.

The 83rd Annual Meeting of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery will be held May 4-7, 2003 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts. The abstract deadline (http://aats03.agora.com/papersubmitter/login.asp) for the meeting is October 18, 2002. The Annual Meeting will once again include Developing the Academic Surgeon Symposium on Saturday, May 3rd and on Sunday, May 4th the AATS/STS Post Graduate Symposia on Adult Cardiac Surgery, Congenital Heart Disease, and General Thoracic Surgery.

The Sixth Annual Meeting of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery will be held at the Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco on June 18-21, 2003. The theme of the meeting is "Pushing the Science, Pioneering the Practice of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery." More details can be found at http://www.ctsnet.org/doc/6376.

The 29th Annual Meeting of the Western Thoracic Surgical Association will be held June 18-21, 2003, at the La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California. The abstract deadline for the meeting is January 3, 2003. The call for abstracts will be mailed later this fall. Abstracts are being accepted for the Annual Meeting of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, to be held in Leipzig February 23-26, 2003. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is September 15, 2002, so time is short! Abstracts should be submitted electronically at http://www.ctsnet.org/abstracts/gstcvs/649.

The European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery (EACTS) is proud to announce Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (ICVTS), a new fast-track publication platform being launched in cooperation with Elsevier Science. The goals are to speed the dissemination of information to the reader, and to make the articles fully interactive for discussion. All subscribers to the European Journal of Cardio-thoracic Surgery will receive ICVTS. Full access to this website is free of charge during the extended launch period.
