The anterior cervicothoracic approach was used to remove a desmoid tumor of the thoracic outlet in a 70-year-old male. The chest wall was reconstructed with titanium bars and a polytetrafluoroethylene-patch. The clavicle was fixed using a titanium clip.
The patient suffered damage to the neck duct resulting in swelling that made local repair of the duct impossible. The author demonstrates his technique for ligating the duct via a posterior VATS approach.
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation raises technical problems in patients with end stage heart failure and huge left ventricular aneurysm. This video shows how an LVAD can be implanted safely even in patients requiring left ventricular aneurysm resection.
At the recent 2013 STS Annual Meeting CTSNet hosted a video roundtable with important perspectives on how valve clinic programs can assist in combating undertreated valvular heart disease. The discussion was moderated by Mike Mack, MD.
Roundtable at the 2012 EACTS Annual Meeting: "Lateral Thinking"
Dr. Joerg Seeburger from the Heart Center, Leipzig University, leads a discussion on novel ideas in cardiac surgery and how to advance the specialty in the future.
Christian Schreiber, from Munich, leads a discussion on the highlights of the EACTS 2012 conference in Barcelona with regard to congenital surgery.
Sponsored Video: New Options for Cardioplegia
Tiffany Boyd-Hodgson, PhD, interviews two esteemed cardiothoracic surgeons, Dr. Samuel Weinstein and Dr. Yoshiya Toyoda, on their experiences with cardioplegia options for heart surgery.
At EACTS 2012 in Barcelona, Dr. Joel Dunning led a discussion on second generation TAVI valves, transapical closure devices, transaortic TAVI, transapical mitral repair, and many more issues.
Left internal thoracic artery (ITA) grafting to the left anterior descending artery has long become the gold standard. There is a trend for bilateral ITA grafting, commonly to left-sided arteries. The video shows ITA skeletonization, with low harvesting time, and minimal chest and graft thermal trauma.
Dr. Joel Dunning leads a discussion on VATS and robotic lobectomy, sleeve lobectomy and pneumonectomy, and new devices, as well as many other related issues.
This video demonstrates the cone reconstruction for tricuspid valve repair in a 35-year old patient with severe Ebstein anomaly, reduced exercise tolerance and echocardiographic and MRI findings of torrential valve regurgitation and severely enlarged right heart chambers.
Transaortic Valvular Implantation
This video demonstrates transaortic valve replacement as an alternative to transfemoral and transapical approaches. The transaortic approach has been proposed as an alternative to the transapical route because of proposed benefits for the patients in terms of speedier recovery and reduced morbidity.
New iPad and iPhone App: Heart Chart
Heart Chart is a great tool for the practicing or training cardiac surgeon. With nothing but your finger, draw bypass grafts, repair and replace valves, and make a record of all the other operations you do as a heart surgeon.
At the recent EACTS meeting Dr. Doug Wood led a discussion on the treatment of limited stage mesothelioma. Topics included MARS Trial, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) vs. extended pleurectomy and decortication.
Repair of an Aortopulmonary Window with Interrupted Aortic Arch
Aortopulmonary window associated with interrupted aortic arch is a rare malformation. This video shows the one-stage repair of the defect in a 2.4 kg neonate.
A Dacron sleeve around the dilated ascending aorta is a simple technique that allows the ascending aorta to adopt the shape of the Dacron tube graft which avoids wrinkle formation, dislocation and erosion.
Robotic Thymectomy via Right Chest Approach
A right robotic thymectomy is described for the treatment of myasthenia gravis and thymoma. Early results are comparable to sternotomy and VATS approaches. A novel technique using ICG for contralateral phrenic nerve identification is also described.
CTJournals iPhone and iPad App
CT Journals, a free iPad and iPhone app, is a scholarly journal aggregator for healthcare providers interested in cardiothoracic and vascular disease. The user can quickly scan current article abstracts in 24 journals. The abstracts can be stored on the device for offline study, shared with friends and colleagues via email or Twitter, and 20 related articles can be automatically fetched from MEDLINE for each current abstract.
Stephan Schueler, MD, PhD
Prof. Stephan Schueler is a past president of ISHLT and of the ESCVS. He helped to set up both the Berlin Heart Centre, and a new centre in Dresden before moving to the Freeman Hospital, where he leads the Ventricular Assist Device Programme, which is the subject of this interview. Also shown are his implantation technique and an interview with one of his patients.
Induction chemoradiotherapy is a relative contraindication to VATS lobectomy due to oncological concerns. This video demonstrates a VATS lower lobectomy and radical systematic lymphadenectomy in a 53-year-old male who recurred locally following induction chemoradiotherapy.
