What is the Relationship of General Thoracic Surgery to Cardiac Surgery?

Dr. Douglas E. Wood, Seattle, Washington USA has designed a survey to investigate this relationship amongst the members of the cardiac and thoracic community, and is obtaining data from cardiothoracic surgeons around the world.

We invite you to participate in a survey that will only take a few minutes of your time. Your participation is important as this will help us to understand the educational background and the professional activity of general thoracic surgeons and their inter-relationship with cardiac surgery and general surgery around the world.

Training and certification for general thoracic surgeons varies enormously between countries. For some, thoracic surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery, in others general thoracic surgeons are trained in parallel but separate from cardiac surgeons, while in others cardiac and thoracic surgery training are united and lead to common certification. This survey’s goal is to outline the types of training and certification for general thoracic surgeons, and specifically looking at the relationship, or lack thereof, between thoracic surgery training and cardiac surgery training around the world. This should only require 5-10 minutes of your time. Responses will remain confidential, and results will be published in the thoracic surgery literature and CTSNet in late 2008.

The questionnaire is available online. For your convenience a copy of the URL is also given in case the hyperlink in this message is not functioning:

www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=GzWwwDWSi_2b2h2e2MimQ2UQ_3d_3d.

Thank you for taking the time to answer these few questions to help us understand our specialty better.

A second award will be granted to an International (non-North American) resident for travel to a North American Center of Excellence

The grant of $7,500 will be provided to the successful applicants to underwrite their travel and living expenses incurred during a maximum of three weeks of training at one or more Endovascular Centers of Excellence. The funds are also intended to provide for roundtrip travel and accommodations at the International Congress XXII on Endovascular Interventions scheduled for February 8-12, 2009 in Scottsdale, AZ. Registration for the Congress and all related events will be covered by the EBDVSS. Fellowship travel must be completed prior to January 1, 2009.

Applicants must have approval from their home and prospective host institutions. International Board of Blood Management

The American Society of ExtraCorporeal Technology (AmSECT) is pleased to announce the establishment of a certifying agency for the recognition of individuals performing autotransfusion as part of a comprehensive blood management program.

The International Board of Blood Management (IBBM) has the mission of promoting education and sound scientific principles to advance the safe and competent practice of perioperative blood management. The IBBM was designed to provide a process to formally recognize individuals who administer blood management services with primary emphasis on autotransfusion. The recognition will occur following the successful completion of requirements listed on the IBBM website (Intbbm.org). The requirements will include completion of an application for certification and the successful completion of an examination on blood management subject matter including autotransfusion techniques. Recertification will be conducted on a yearly basis and include a clinical activity requirement. Successful completion of all requirements for certification will result in certification by the IBBM of the successful applicant as a Perioperative Blood Management Technologist (PBMT). The PBMT is an individual who is currently providing the service of autotransfusion as a component of a blood conservation program. The individual will be knowledgeable in the techniques of autotransfusion as well as blood management subject matter which will include hematology, physiology, mechanical sciences and regulatory mandates by national and federal organizations.

The inaugural examination will be held on April 8, 2008 at AmSECT's 46th International Conference at the Hilton Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, FL. The examination will follow a special symposium on Autotransfusion which will be conducted in the morning prior to the exam. Additional information can be found at the IBBM website or by contacting the National Office at 570-764-7727 or via e-mail at info@intbbm.org.

Time to Intervention During Cardiac Interventions. Are We Forgetting a Confounder?
Asian Cardiovasc Thorac Ann 2008;16:1-3.

The authors rightly point out that in comparing groups of patients, the time to intervention must be taken into account, for in some comparisons, the time frames can be quite different. Example: in CAD, CABG vs. percutaneous interventions.
