Fred Grover receives award

Dr. Frederick L. Grover, President-elect of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, was recently awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Duke University School of Medicine.

Pioneer Cardiac Surgeon Dies

On 9 September 2005, Dr. Andrew Logan died. A pioneer in cardiothoracic surgery, he was best known for his part in developing a transventricular dilator used in the closed approach for treatment for mitral stenosis. His dilator is still used in many underdeveloped countries today.

Wilfred Bigelow Dies
06-April-2005

Deceased: Wilford Bigelow, on March 28, 2005 at the age of 92. Dr. Bigelow was a pioneer cardiac surgeon.   He was a past president of the AATS, and received many honors throughout his long career,  including the Order of Canada.  Click above for a tribute by his colleagues in Toronto.

Pioneer Surgeon W. Glenn Young dies

Deceased:  On December 21, 2004, the surgical community was saddened to hear of the death of pioneer surgeon Dr. W. Glenn Young, Jr.  He spent his entire professional career at Duke Medical Center, after receiving his undergraduate and medical degrees from Duke University.  Read the tribute to him by two colleagues at Duke.

Dr. Donald Effler Remembered

Deceased: Dr. Donald B. Effler, on August 24, 2004, at the age of 89. A giant in cardiothoracic surgery, he was head of Cleveland Clinic's Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, where he and colleagues developed techniques for visualizing the coronary arteries and then surgically bypassing the obstructions.  See his tribute written by Dr. Floyd Loop.
