Carolyn E. Reed Traveling Fellowship

Please consider contributing to the Carolyn E. Reed Traveling Fellowship. Dr. Reed was a cardiothoracic surgeon, an educator, and a successful researcher, who died early. To honor the memory of Dr. Reed and further her commitment to education and innovation, the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education in conjunction with Women in Thoracic Surgery, has established the Carolyn E. Reed Traveling Fellowship.

Medical University of South Carolina Grieves the Loss of Carolyn E. Reed, MD

Dr. Reed died on November 16, 2012. She achieved an international reputation as a thoracic surgeon and oncologist with specific expertise in lung and esophageal cancer. Dr. Reed was a renowned surgical educator and was elected to membership in the most prominent surgical organizations, serving in important leadership roles in many of these organizations.

Harold Clifton Urschel, Jr, passed away on November 12, 2012, aged 82. He was a past President of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Texas Surgical Association.

The American Association for Thoracic Surgery is now accepting Abstracts and Case Videos for the 93rd Annual Meeting to be held in Minneapolis, MN, USA from May 4 - 8, 2013. You and your colleagues are strongly encouraged to submit Abstracts or Case Videos of original work for consideration as part of the scientific program.

Hans Pilegaard has performed almost 1,000 procedures using a novel method of Nuss bar insertion that uses a short-bar technique. In this latest interview of the Innovators in cardiothoracic surgery, Pilegaard describes the short-bar technique. Intraoperative video is included of Dr. Pilegaard performing the operation at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
