Funding
Our laboratory has a strong record of receiving funding for various research endeavors. We rely heavily on funding from the National Heart Lung & Blood Institute (NHLBI). Our facility is also an NIH training site and receives funding under a T32 NIH training grant for Surgery Residents. Although not required, over the last 5 years, 80% of the fellows from our laboratories that have applied for individual funding under the NIH F32 National Research Service Award have received support. Facilities and Personnel
The majority of our research is performed on the third floor of the Medical Research 4 (MR4) building located directly behind the main hospital at the University of Virginia. This building contains a total of 2500 square feet for the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (TCV) Research laboratories, including 1000 square feet of laboratory bench space. This space is contiguous with several areas of different surgical research pursuits that allow for consultation and discussion. Victor Laubach PhD oversees the molecular and cellular biology studies performed in the TCV laboratory and runs a fully equipped molecular and cellular biology laboratory. In addition, a full time laboratory manager is employed in the laboratory (Tony Herring), as are two full-time technicians for animal handling and assistance with experiments. We also have two postdoctoral researchers, and we constantly have several undergraduate or medical school students helping out in the lab. The Dept. of Comparative Medicine is located in the basement of the MR4 building and provides 3 operating rooms, animal housing facilities, and two full time veterinarians.
