David Taggart, MD
Dr. Taggart is a cardiac surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. After becoming a consultant, he completed a PhD and wrote a systematic review on total arterial grafting, which was published in the Lancet. This led to the ART trial, where Taggart led the randomization of more than 3,000 patients, using 76 surgeons in 28 hospitals in 7 countries. In recognition of this outstanding work, Taggart was appointed Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Oxford University. He has led the search for a balance between PCI and CABG, giving keynote lectures at annual meetings of EACTS and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Taggart was elected 2010 President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland in recognition of his outstanding work. Most recently, he has been part of the collaborative effort that has brought about the ESC / EACTS joint Guidelines on Myocardial Revascularization. These guidelines are discussed in this interview.
