Dr. Mateo Marin-Cuartas is a cardiac surgeon at the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC) in Berlin, Germany. He is board-certified in cardiac surgery and critical care medicine, with a clinical focus on valvular heart disease, minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery, atrial fibrillation surgery, and infective endocarditis. Before joining the DHZC, he trained and worked at the Leipzig Heart Center, where he coordinated Academic Affairs and the Hybrid Thoracoscopic Atrial Fibrillation Ablation program and contributed to the robotic cardiac surgery program, and led the L-SURVIVE research group, focusing primarily on valvular heart disease and infective endocarditis.

Dr. Marin-Cuartas studied medicine at the CES University in Medellin, Colombia. He then obtained his doctoral degree from Leipzig University for research on mitral valve disease and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine focused on heart valve biomechanics. He completed his habilitation (Dr. med. habil.) at Leipzig University, focusing on surgery after failed transcatheter heart valve interventions. His research centers on valvular heart disease, infective endocarditis, atrial fibrillation and transcatheter and minimally invasive treatment strategies.

He is actively involved in international scientific societies and academic initiatives. He serves as a member of the EACTS Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Task Force and was the EACTS-appointed Task Force Coordinator for the 2025 ESC/EACTS Guidelines for the Management of Valvular Heart Disease.
His editorial activities include positions with the European Heart Journal – Valvular and Structural Heart Disease, the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EJCTS), JACC: Case Reports, The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon (TCS), and CTSNet.
