Birmingham Review Course 2024 | Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

Friday, September 19, 2025

Currently in its 32nd year, the Birmingham Review Course is the longest-running course in the cardiothoracic specialty. The 2025 course promises an immersive learning experience featuring didactic lectures and interactive seminars on cardiac and thoracic topics, along with opportunities to engage with an international faculty. The 2025 Birmingham Review Course will take place from September 11–13, 2025.

At the 2024 Birmingham Review Course, Dr. Adnan Nadir, a consultant cariologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, delivered a presentation titled “Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI).”

He highlighted the contributing factors that determine who is suitable for TAVI in 2024, as well as how and when to use the procedure. Dr. Nadir discussed both self-expanding and balloon expandable valves. Additionally, he covered TAVI in specific contexts, including bicuspid aortic valves (AV), valve-in-valve (VIV)procedures, and TAVI in native aortic regurgitation (AR). He also addressed TAVI following surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR), discussing bioprosthetic valve fracture, the outcomes of redo TAVI vs TAVI in SAVR, and compared TAVI and SAVR.
