A Eulogy for Willard A. Fry

Wednesday, June 4, 2025

Distinguished thoracic surgeon Dr. Willard A. Fry died on April 29, 2025. Beginning in 1966, he established a remarkable career at Evanston Hospital, Illinois, USA, where he became the chief of general thoracic surgery until his retirement after approximately 40 years. His professional mentor was William E. Adams, professor of surgery at the University of Chicago. Dr. Fry was a leading thoracic surgeon in the Chicago area and was well-known nationally and internationally. His research focused on lung cancer, especially the use of cytologic methods and clinical trials.  He gained international recognition, especially in France, where he often lectured in fluent French. He was an outstanding teacher as a clinical faculty member at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Fry was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy McDougal Fry. They are survived by their children, Kate Fry Kane, a renowned actor; Dr. Michael Fry, professor of pathology emeritus at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine; Peter Fry, a valued teacher of English at the Groton School in Massachusetts; and their seven grandchildren. He will be remembered for his contributions to the cardiothoracic surgery community.

Dr. Willard Fry was a larger than life, unforgettable personality who introduced me to thoracic surgery as a second-year surgery resident at Northwestern University Evanston campus many years ago, took me to present at the Rush-Pres-STLukes cardiac Saturday conferences where I was expected to fool the likes of Najafi, Sabiston, Javid, etc with my case presentations. He was a great friend over the years as was his family(remember playing jacks with his daughter Kate who is now a well known actress). Dr. Fry always brought his positive attitude no matter the situation or your spirit. He made you want to be involved with what he was doing ---whatever he was doing . He was the same colorful, engaging personality at our last dinner at his country club in Evanston. He was a memorable CT surgeon, always presently or commenting at national meetings and one of the major reasons I practice CT surgery today at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Thanks again Dr. Fry. Whatever Willard is doing today I can guarantee you he is having a good time and regaling previous adventures. Frank Baciewicz MD WSU Detroit , MI
