The Wilcoxon (Gehan) statistic was used for comparing the survival experience of patient groups25. Analysis was carried out using a software package (Statistical Program for the Social Sciences; SPSS, Inc; Chicago). The terminal event was death from cancer or unknown cause; deaths within 30 days of operation were excluded.
