Andrew Kalra

Andrew is a native Northern Virginian. He traveled to the West Coast to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), majoring in Biochemistry and working in two translational immunology laboratories. Before medical school, he worked as a Research Technician at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHU SOM), investigating the molecular mechanisms of gastroesophageal neoplasia and developing biomarkers for Barrett’s Esophagus and esophageal malignancies. Currently, he is a second-year at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and collaborates extensively with the Hopkins Exploration, Research, and Advancement in Life Support Device (HERALD) team and Thoracic Working Group at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His primary interests include academic cardiothoracic surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, lung transplantation, and thoracic surgical oncology. Outside academics, he is deeply involved with the Thoracic Surgery Medical Students Association (TSMA) leadership as a Research Committee Member, enjoys strength training in the gym, and runs on the Schuylkill River.
