Dr. Ashley R. Wilson-Smith is a current surgical officer at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, pursuing a career in cardiothoracic surgery with a focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgical approaches, with an additional special interest in intensive care medicine. His research focus includes minimally invasive, endovascular, and robotic techniques in the management of aortic disease, coronary bypass, valvular pathologies, thoracic malignancies, and intensive care. Dr. Wilson-Smith believes in embodying the stereotype of the “clinician-scientist”, where genuine passion, pursuit of excellence, and the continual desire for improvement in both academia and clinical work form core components of his practice. To that effect, Dr. Wilson-Smith is actively involved in clinical research, teaching and supervision as a research associate, conjoint, clinical supervisor and visiting scholar at the Macquarie University, the University of Newcastle, the University of New South Wales, the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the University of Sydney, and the Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH/SAN). He is currently supervising 50 research students with an interest in sub-speciality cardiothoracic surgery, with the expectation of producing high-performing, high-output, and heavily cited undergraduate and post-graduate research candidates. These students are managed through the Collaborative Research Group, which has been in practice for over a decade under the leadership of Professor Tristan D. Yan. Additionally, he is facilitating a number of formal independent learning projects and Honours theses at the aforementioned academic institutions. Dr. Wilson-Smith is engaged in a number of clinical journals as an issue editor, peer-reviewer, and copyeditor. He is involved in a number of professional organisations, such as the Thoracic Oncology Group of Australia (TOGA), as a principal researcher.

Dr. Wilson-Smith has accrued several years of clinical experience in surgery, managing patients from a pre-, peri,- and post-operative perspective, alongside managing junior medical officers in an administrative and supervisory role. He has completed all of the clinical development courses provided by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons United Kingdom (ASSET/BSS, EMST/ATLS, CCRISP). Dr. Wilson-Smith has also begun instructing as a faculty member for junior doctors in the United Kingdom in equivalent courses to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (e.g., CCRISP, EMST, etc.), through the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Dr. Wilson-Smith is currently completing a Graduate Diploma of Clinical Ultrasound (UMELB), a Master of Surgery (USYD), and a Ph.D. (MQU) via original analysis and publication, titled “The Posterior VATS Technique in Thoracic Oncology and the Evolution to Robotic Thoracic Surgery”, in a concurrent manner. He has previously completed study with a Master of Surgical Traumatology (UON) with Distinction. His formative medical studies were completed at the University of New South Wales, Sydney (BMED, MD).
