Can Gollmann-Tepeköylü, Assoc. Prof. Dr.
BACKGROUND
Can Gollmann-Tepeköylü, MD, PhD, MSc, is an Austrian board-certified cardiac surgeon and Associate Professor at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, where he also serves as Deputy Director of the Department and Program Director of the Clinical Heart Failure Unit.
He obtained a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology and has completed an MSc in Statistics for Clinical Trials at University College London as a recipient of the EACTS Francis Fontan Fellowship.
His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery, with a particular focus on minimally invasive and endoscopic mitral valve surgery and heart failure surgery. His research program combines translational and clinical investigation aimed at understanding cardiovascular disease mechanisms and developing novel therapeutic strategies. Major areas of interest include myocardial regeneration, heart failure, calcific aortic valve disease, perioperative myocardial injury, and biomarker-guided risk stratification.
His work has contributed to the development of regenerative therapies for ischemic heart failure, including cardiac shockwave therapy, and to advances in the understanding of perioperative myocardial infarction and calcific aortic valve disease. His research has resulted in investigator-initiated clinical trials, competitive research funding, patents, and more than 110 peer-reviewed publications in journals including the European Heart Journal, Circulation, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Gollmann-Tepeköylü is actively involved in the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), where he previously served as Chair of the Residents’ Committee and currently serves on the Innovation Committee and Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee. He is the founder and host of the EACTS podcast A Cut Above and served as Associate Editor of the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EJCTS) and Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery (ICVTS).
