BACKGROUND
I am Dr Chidiebere Emmanuel Okechukwu, an AHCS‑accredited Specialist Echocardiographer and BSE Level 2 TTE–accredited clinician with advanced expertise across TTE, contrast, bubble studies, stress echocardiography, congenital imaging, and 3D/4D echocardiography. My doctoral training in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, and Public Health provides a rare and highly valuable diagnostic foundation in cardiac infection encompassing the microbiology of cardiac pathogens, the pathophysiology of infective endocarditis, pericarditis, myocarditis, and the cardiovascular sequelae of systemic infection.
This dual clinical–scientific background enables a uniquely informed approach to echocardiographic screening for endocarditis, vegetation identification, valvular destruction, pericardial disease, and infection‑related haemodynamic compromise. I apply this depth of knowledge in daily practice, performing and reporting advanced echocardiograms across complex adult cardiac pathology, and supporting TOE procedures through high‑quality patient preparation, intraprocedural monitoring, and real‑time image optimisation.
I am committed to developing advanced TOE capability with a specialist focus on infection‑related cardiac imaging—particularly prosthetic valve endocarditis, device‑related infection, and complex inpatient diagnostic pathways. My background in clinical microbiology and public health strengthens multidisciplinary collaboration with cardiology, infectious diseases, microbiology, and cardiothoracic surgery teams, positioning me to contribute meaningfully to IE pathways, TOE‑driven diagnostics, and service development.
Alongside clinical practice, I bring a strong academic and leadership profile—having led international research collaborations, supervised multidisciplinary teams, secured competitive research funding, and delivered teaching in cardiovascular physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, and public health. I actively contribute to departmental audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance, and I am committed to advancing physiologist‑led innovation within echocardiography services.
My long‑term trajectory is toward advanced practice and Clinical Scientist roles, integrating high‑level clinical echocardiography, TOE expertise, infection‑imaging leadership, and research‑driven service development to improve diagnostic accuracy, patient outcomes, and multidisciplinary care in cardiac infection.
OTHER INTERESTS
My interest in 3D and 4D echocardiography centres on its application to native and prosthetic valve assessment and screening, both in routine transthoracic imaging and through intraoperative TOE support.
RESEARCH
My doctoral research (PhD in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Public Health, Sapienza University of Rome, 2019–2023, Distinction) provided deeper academic grounding in the microbiology of cardiac pathogens, the pathophysiology of infective endocarditis, pericarditis and myocarditis, and the cardiovascular sequelae of systemic infection. This work continues to inform my clinical approach to echocardiographic screening for endocarditis, vegetation identification, valvular assessment and pericardial disease.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Echocardiography at the University of the West of England, Bristol (October 2023 – June 2024), graduating with Distinction. This programme is aligned to BSE and NHSE CCETP standards and provided comprehensive competency development across standard and advanced TTE, contrast echocardiography, bubble studies, stress echocardiography, congenital echo, 3D/4D imaging, and TOE assistance. Alongside the Distinction, I concurrently achieved BSE Level 2 Adult TTE Accreditation and AHCS Specialist Echocardiographer status.

My PhD in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Public Health (Sapienza University of Rome, 2019–2023, Distinction) gave me in-depth knowledge of cardiac pathogens, the pathophysiology of infective endocarditis, pericarditis and myocarditis, and the cardiovascular sequelae of systemic infection. This directly informs my approach to echocardiographic screening for vegetations, valvular destruction and pericardial effusion.
My MSc in Physical Activity & Health Promotion (University of Rome Tor Vergata, 2017–2019, Distinction) provided strong grounding in cardiorespiratory physiology — cardiac output, oxygen kinetics and haemodynamic responses to exercise — which underpins my understanding of stress and sports echocardiography.
My BSc in Human Physiology with Cardiovascular Specialisation (Nnamdi Azikiwe University, 2011–2015) established the core scientific understanding of cardiac anatomy, haemodynamics and cardiovascular pathophysiology that forms the basis of all my imaging interpretation.
Together, this pathway has taken me from strong physiological foundations, through infection-related expertise, to fully accredited, practice-ready clinical echocardiography skills.
