Throughout my doctoral studies, I collaborated with multidisciplinary teams of researchers and clinicians, gaining invaluable experience in both laboratory and clinical settings. My Ph.D. research focused on understanding the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of novel drug candidates, with an emphasis on optimizing drug efficacy while minimizing adverse effects. This work was pivotal in informing clinical trial designs and identifying potential biomarkers for patient-specific treatments.

As a licensed pharmacist, I currently work in a clinical setting, where I apply my research knowledge to improve patient care through personalized medication therapy management. I work closely with healthcare providers to ensure the safe and effective use of pharmaceuticals and help bridge the gap between scientific research and practical applications in patient care.

My area of interest is the growing field of digital health and the integration of technology with pharmacology. From drug monitoring systems to the use of artificial intelligence in drug discovery, I believe that technology has the potential to revolutionize both pharmacy practice and drug development. My goal is to stay at the forefront of these advancements and contribute to innovative solutions that improve patient care and optimize therapeutic outcomes.

Ultimately, without hesitation, my interest in the pharmaceutical industry is driven by a desire to make a tangible impact on patient lives, whether through advancing drug therapies, improving medication safety, or ensuring that groundbreaking treatments are accessible to those who need them most.

During my Ph.D., I conducted several projects that aimed to uncover how various factors such as genetics, metabolism, and age influence drug responses in individuals. One of my most notable research projects involved developing predictive models for drug-drug interactions, particularly in polypharmacy settings where patients are prescribed multiple medications. These models have potential applications in reducing adverse drug reactions and optimizing therapeutic outcomes.
I have also explored the role of pharmacogenomics in tailoring drug therapies to individual patients. By identifying genetic markers that influence drug metabolism and efficacy, I believe we can move toward more personalized and targeted treatments, which would significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs in the long run.
In addition to my academic research, I have a strong interest in pharmaceutical industry trends, particularly in the areas of drug discovery, formulation development, and regulatory affairs. My exposure to the industry’s research pipeline has enhanced my understanding of the challenges and innovations that drive the development of new medications, and I am eager to contribute to this process in a meaningful way.

Phoebe Gneza is a pharmacist who earned her Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Toxicology from the School of Health at the University of Johannesburg in 2011. In 2012, she joined the pharmaceutical group MERCK, where she has been actively involved in collaborative projects across Africa. In 2013, she entered a postdoctoral program at the University of Saint George, in partnership with three U.S. universities, where she obtained a Postdoctoral Certificate in Photodynamic Therapy.
