Gareth Owens, Mr
BACKGROUND
Gareth is a patient advocate who survived an acute Aortic Dissection, undergoing extensive open Aortic surgery at Barts, the UK’s leading specialist Aortic centre.
He is the Founding Chair of the national patient charity Aortic Dissection Awareness UK & Ireland, which created and leads the global THINK AORTA campaign.
OTHER INTERESTS
Gareth believes that patients, as the ultimate consumers, have a vital role to play at the heart of clinical research and in improvements to the healthcare system. His interests include the role of lived experience in research, patient safety and systems improvement, and empowering patients to use their voices to play a full part in improving healthcare.
RESEARCH
Gareth’s research interests are the prevention of acute Aortic Dissection through improved awareness, screening and surveillance in Heritable Thoracic Aortic Disease. He is an advocate of high-quality research, co-produced with patients, and for national investments in networks of specialist Aortic centres to better serve the needs of patients.
