Karen B. Abeln initially trained as a lawyer in Australia and the United Kingdom before changing to medicine. She is now a senior resident in cardiac surgery and trained under Prof. H-J. Schäfers.

Her research focuses on autologous treatment of congenital aortic valve disease in adults with a special interest in aortic valve repair and the Ross procedure.
