At the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland Annual Meeting, Dr. Pedro Catarino, professor and Director of Aortic Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, delivered a presentation on “Transplantation Across the Pond: Is the Grass Really Greener?” He discussed the differences in heart and lung transplant survival outcomes and the volume of the procedures performed in the USA compared to the UK. Additionally, he explored the organization of transplantation in the USA, including the roles of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs), and transplant hospitals. Dr. Catarino also highlighted various lessons that the UK could learn from the USA regarding transplant practices, particularly emphasizing the differences in transplant staffing between the two countries.
