At the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland Annual Meeting, leading surgeons presented on cardiac revascularization.
Dr. Tarun Mital, a consultant cardiothoracic radiologist at Harefield Hospital, UK, and honorary senior clinical lecturer at Imperial College London, delivered a presentation on “CT Imaging for Coronary Artery Disease.” He explored the challenges associated with imaging the heart, cardiac computed tomography (CT) indications, and electrocardiogram-gating. He also examined cardiac CT angiography for prognosis and provided insights into the SYNTAX III revolution trial.
Following this, Dr. Ferdi Akca, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, presented on “Endoscopic Multivessel Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.” His discussion focused on minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and showcased real footage of endoscopic CABG procedures. He highlighted the benefits of the endoscopic approach, shared insights from the Eindhoven experience, and addressed future training and collaboration.
Dr. Ferdi Akca also delivered a second presentation titled “Expanding Indications Endoscopic Coronary Surgery.” In this presentation, he discussed the benefits of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation and off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB), emphasizing the importance of respecting the anaortic OPCAB philosophy. He then explored concomitant AF ablation and showed footage of the procedure.
Finally, Dr. David Rose, consultant cardiac surgeon at The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle, UK, concluded the session with his presentation titled “Intraoperative Flow Assessment in CABG.” He shared insights on why we measure flow, transit-time flow measurement (TTFM), and key TTFM parameters. Dr. Rose also covered intraoperative transit-time flow measurement in CABG, poor TTFM readings, and understanding graft physiology.
The session then concluded with a Q&A segment.
