Atiq Rehman Discusses the First Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Program in Pakistan

Joel Dunning talks with Atiq Rehman about Dr. Rehman’s work to set up the first minimally invasive cardiac surgery program in Pakistan. Dr. Rehman is the Director of the Robotic and Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery & Transcatheter Valve Program at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida. Recently, Dr. Rehman has partnered with the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) in Rawalpindi, to develop Pakistan’s first minimally invasive cardiac surgery program. The first minimally invasive mitral repair was performed in December of 2013. Dr. Rehman continues to work with the AFIC to further develop the minimally invasive cardiac surgery program.

In this interview, Mr. Dunning and Dr. Rehman discuss Pakistan’s current medical environment, the creation of the minimally invasive surgical program, and the importance of introducing minimally invasive surgical techniques within emerging market countries.
