SCTS 2026 | Aortic Dissection

At the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland Annual Meeting, leading surgeons presented on aortic dissection.   

Dr. Martin Czerny, a consultant cardiovascular surgeon at University Hospital Freiburg, Germany, delivered a presentation titled “Non-A Non-B Aortic Dissection: The Enemy of Both Worlds.” He explored the aorta as an organ, delving into the understanding of disease mechanisms and the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA). Additionally, he examined the Windkessel function, the 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) index event, and the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique in non-A-non-B aortic dissection 

Next, Dr. Omar Nawaytou, a consultant cardiac and aortic surgeon at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, UK, spoke about “Type A Aortic Dissection With Malperfusion: How Far Should We Go.” His discussion covered the Penn classification, malperfusion, and malperfusion syndrome. He also addressed endovascular vs open repair, paraplegia, and Ascyrus Medical Dissection Stent (AMDS).  

Then, Dr. Ahmed Othman, a consultant cardiac and aortic surgeon at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, UK, presented on “Post Type A Dissection Repair: Go for Redo Surgery.” He discussed reintervention after Type A repair, contemporary redo arch outcomes, and operative strategies. His talk included insights on various cases, such as heritable aortopathy and graft infection.  

Finally, Dr. Said Abisi, a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, UK, explored “Post Type A Dissection Repair: Go for Endo-Arch.” He discussed who benefits from endovascular arch repair, false lumen occlusion, and the endo-arch concept. Abisi also addressed key challenges in endovascular aortic arch repair, including anatomical factors and evolving technology factors.  

All presentations concluded with Q&A sessions.
