Friday, August 1, 2025

Currently in its 32nd year, the Birmingham Review Course is the longest-running course in the cardiothoracic specialty. The 2025 course promises an immersive learning experience featuring didactic lectures and interactive seminars on cardiac and thoracic topics, along with opportunities to engage with an international faculty. The 2025 Birmingham Review Course will take place from September 11–13, 2025.

At the 2024 Birmingham Review Course, Juliet King, a consultant thoracic surgeon and clinical lead for thoracic surgery at Guy’s Hospital, London, presented a course titled “The Management of Primary and Secondary Pneumothorax.” In this presentation, she discussed effective surgical treatment for primary and secondary pneumothorax cases. Dr. King explored the challenges of treating these often-complex cases. She also discussed how the British Thoracic Society Guidelines on Pleural Disease informs management before surgical intervention, and how to determine when surgery is needed. Further discussion included the principles of pneumothorax surgery, identifying and treating the source of air leaks, what to do if the air leak cannot be found, and identifying and addressing other complications.
