The New STS Atrial Fibrillation Guidelines

Four experts on the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation met at the 2017 STS Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, to discuss the recently released STS clinical practice guidelines on the subject. James Edgerton of the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano is joined by Niv Ad and Vinay Badhwar of the West Virginia University Heart and Vascular Institute, and Richard Shemin of the University of California Los Angeles. The panelists outline how surgical ablation has evolved over the past ten years, utilizing the heart team for optimal treatment of atrial fibrillation, and the need for additional long-term data. The panelists also discuss the rigorous process involved in creating clinical practice guidelines.
