SCTS 2025 | MICS and ERAS in Cardiac Surgery: Seven Pillars

In March 2025, the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland held its annual meeting, bringing together professionals in the field of cardiothoracic surgery to discuss the latest advancements in technologies and techniques. At the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland Annual Meeting, Dr. Marco Di Eusanio, director of the cardiac surgery department at Lancisi Cardiovascular Center and professor at Università Politecnica delle Marche, delivered a presentation on “MICS and ERAS in Cardiac Surgery: Seven Pillars.” The seven pillars discussed include raising the bar and setting new therapeutic targets, promoting an interdisciplinary approach, setting up a prehabilitation program to enhance patient education and fitness, enhancing perioperative pain management, optimizing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), becoming a minimally invasive cardiac surgeon, and implementing table extubation and early rehabilitation. Dr. Di Eusanio also discussed the benefits of minimally invasive extracorporeal circulation (MiECC), patient perception, and various approaches, including transaxillary, endoscopic, and robotic.
