This comprehensive discussion focuses on robotic coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), including the challenges and benefits of establishing a robotic CABG program, clinical trials, and the evolution of CABG with advanced technologies.
This important roundtable features cardiac surgeon Lorena Montes and expert robotic cardiac surgeons Wouter Oosterlinck, Professor of Cardiac Surgery at University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium; Sudhir Shrivastava, cardiac surgeon and Founder, Chairman, and CEO of SS Innovations; and Husam Balkhy, Professor of Surgery and Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery at UChicago Medicine, Illinois, USA.
They discussed how to scale a robotic cardiac program and the need for strong support from a collaborative interventional cardiology group, as well as developing the program gradually. They also highlighted mastering robotic technology to shorten procedures and reduce risks for both patients and surgeons.
The conversation then turned to proactive drain management, pain management, and the gold standards of care in robotic CABG. The panel also explored the degree of invasiveness that defines “minimally invasive,” certification and robotic registries, democratizing access to the tools and technologies that make less invasive surgeries successful, and data gathering through clinical trials. Finally, the panel spoke of the importance of considering hybrid approaches.
At the 40th European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting, CTSNet connected with leading cardiothoracic surgeons from around the world to explore the latest advances in the field. Watch for additional interviews from the meeting.
