CTSNet Video Roundtable – Navigating the Maze: Contemporary Views on the Value of the Surgical AFib Procedure

During the STS 50th Anniversary Meeting in Orlando, FL, CTSNet hosted a very informative video roundtable discussion with some of the leading surgeon educators in the field of surgical atrial fibrillation treatment.

The discussion focused on the benefits of the Maze procedure in terms of procedural outcomes, patient satisfaction, and the development of stronger referral networks. The surgeons also discussed the use of surgeon training and other educational resources to learn how to perform the procedure safely and efficiently, as well as the role of systematic follow-up in understanding patient outcomes, including quality of life issues.

The panel was made up of prominent academic and private practice cardiothoracic surgeons, and included: Marc W. Gerdisch, MD, Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the St. Francis Heart Center in Indianapolis, IN; Patrick M. McCarthy, MD, Director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL; and Jonathan M. Philpott, MD, Director of Surgical Electrophysiology at the Sentara Heart Arrhythmia Center, Norfolk, VA. Joel Dunning, FRCS, of James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, moderated the discussion.
