Left Atrial Appendage Clip in Three Minutes

Keywords:

This video shows two examples of left video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) left atrial appendage clipping, focusing on the three elements of port placement, pericardial opening, and perfect clip placement. This technique is increasingly used by surgeons as a standalone procedure or as part of surgical atrial fibrillation ablation in either the Convergent or totally thoracoscopic MAZE procedures.

  1. Is this “stand-alone” surgical Left Atrial Appendage Closure procedure performed only in patients who fail percutaneous placement of a Watchman device – or is it performed as an alternative to the Watchman?

The reason this is an important question is that if this procedure is an alternative to the Watchman, it’s safety relative to the PMA device has not been determined properly. On the other hand, if this procedure is only offered to patients who stand to benefit from a LAAC and who have FAILED Watchman placement, it may be justified.
