At the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland Annual Meeting, leading surgeons presented on various thoracic topics, including pectus care, chest wall resection and reconstruction, and sympathectomy.
Dr. Joel Dunning, CTSNet Editor-in-Chief and a cardiothoracic surgeon at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, UK, delivered a presentation on “Pectus Care in 2026.” He explored the RESTORE trial, the reasons behind the withdrawal of pectus surgery in England, and the best practice guidelines for pectus procedures. Additionally, he discussed modern pectus surgery, including the Nuss procedure and its seven golden rules, and provided examples of challenging cases.
Next, Dr. Eustace J. Fontaine, a thoracic surgeon at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK, spoke about “Advanced Chest Wall Resection and Reconstruction.” He covered topics such as chest wall sarcoma, multimodality treatment, principles of resection, and chest wall soft tissue reconstruction. Dr. Fontaine also presented a case and its postoperative course.
Finally, Dr. Donna Eaton, a thoracic and lung transplantation surgeon at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, concluded the session with her presentation titled “Indications for Sympathectomy.” She shared insights on the indications for sympathectomy, sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis, robotic sympathectomy, and the advantages of the robotic approach. Dr. Eaton also discussed cardiac sympathetic denervation and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) setup for children and unstable adults.
All presentations concluded with Q&A sessions.
