At the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland Annual Meeting, leading surgeons presented on minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
Dr. Ranjit Deshpande, a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at King’s College Hospital and Cleveland Clinic, London, UK, delivered a presentation titled “Multi Valve Surgery Through Minimal Access Approach: Who, When, and How?” He discussed mitral valve disease, anesthesia and monitoring, and femoral artery and vein exposure. He also showcased various case studies.
Next, Dr. Daniel Pereda, a consultant cardiovascular surgeon at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, Spain, spoke on “Robotic Mitral Surgery: Does the Clinical Benefit Justify the Challenges?” He highlighted the advantages of robotic surgery, the current status of robotics in mitral surgery, and the challenges of robotics in cardiac surgery. Additionally, he discussed totally-thoracoscopic closed-chest surgery and the unique features of robotics for training.
Then, Dr. Paolo Bosco, a consultant cardiac surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK presented on “Hybrid AF Surgery: Convergent, Posterior Wall Isolation, and Beyond.” He provided a classification of atrial fibrillation (AF) and offered a strategic overview of AF treatment. Dr. Bosco elaborated on the convergent procedure, discussing its indications and the CONVERGE trial.
Finally, Dr. Manuel Castellá, cardiovascular surgeon and Chief of Cardiac Surgery Section at Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona, Spain, explored “Decision-Making for Conversion in Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.” His presentations delved into surgical decision-making and the importance of timing, as well as conversion scores.
The session concluded with a Q&A segment.
