This session shows leading surgeons presenting on tricuspid valve challenges at the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland Annual Meeting.
Dr. Norman Briffa, a consultant cardiac surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and a Reader at the University of Sheffield, UK, discussed “Challenges in Tricuspid Valve Management.” He addressed the goals of the British Heart Valve Society, transcatheter therapy, and tricuspid valve imaging, as well as concomitant functional tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and treatment options for tricuspid valve disease.
Following him, Dr. Madalina Garbi, a consultant cariologist at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, UK, presented on “Imaging of the Tricuspid Valve for Cardiac Surgeons.” She covered tricuspid valve (TV) complex morphology, 3D echocardiography, and the assessment of leaflet coaptation, along with quantifying TR severity and classification.
Next, Dr. Robert Smith, a consultant interventional cardiologist at The Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, UK, discussed “Transcatheter Treatment of Tricuspid Regurgitation—Is the Time Now?” His presentation included transcatheter tricuspid valve intervention, current guidelines for TR, and the increase in isolated tricuspid surgery volume. He also discussed the TRI-SCORE surgical risk calculator, caval valve implantation (CAVI), and transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR).
Finally, Dr. Neil Cartwright, a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, UK, presented on “The Evidence for Tricuspid Valve Repair.” He addressed the primary and secondary mechanisms of TR, the history of TR, and techniques for valve repair. He also explored concomitant surgery, TRI-SCORE, and transcatheter trials.
The session concluded with a Q&A segment.
