At the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) 2025 Annual Conference, Dr. James Long, a thoracic surgeon at INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA, delivered a presentation titled “Disruptive Innovation.”
In his presentation, Dr. Long explored the origins of the Hastings lecture and the shaping of an early-career surgeon's perspectives. He discussed whether cardiac surgery has a future, and what it takes to create artificial organs, such as exploration, innovation, invention, and more.
Additionally, he addressed lessons learned from the past, focusing on improving outcomes in blood pump therapy and sharing insights on post-REMATCH single-center experiences. Key factors impacting success and clinical measures to prevent and manage device failure were also discussed. Furthermore, Dr. Long provided an overview of mechanical circulatory support (MCS), including technologies, patient management, and patient selection for MCS.
