This interview focuses on AfroScore for risk stratification in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). At the 40th European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) Annual Meeting, CTSNet Senior Editor—Global Emily Farkas, Associate Director of Global Health in Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine, USA, spoke with Valdano Manuel, a cardiovascular surgeon at Clínica Girassol in Luanda, Angola, and Assistant Professor at Jean Piaget University of Angola, to discuss this important topic.
They discussed the inspiration behind AfroScore, variables not included in EuroSCORE, and differences between the two models, including anemia. They also explored whether social variables such as distance from hospitals are included, and how the AfroScore is still under development and is not ready for clinical use. Additionally, they examined what is still needed to validate the model, partnering with hospitals in other countries to create a task force, and the importance of being not only a surgeon but a researcher.
At the 40th European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting, CTSNet connected with leading cardiothoracic surgeons from around the world to explore the latest advances in the field. Watch for additional interviews from the meeting.
