Advancement in the Thoracic Surgery Subspecialty: A Discussion With Drs. Novoa, Colson, and Petersen
At the 2025 SCTS Annual Meeting, CTSNet Senior Editor Dr. Leanne Ashrafian spoke with Drs. Yolonda Colson, chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Hermes C. Grillo Professor of Surgery in the Field of Thoracic Surgery at Harvard Medical School; Nuria M. Novoa, head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at University Hospital Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda in Madrid, and ESTS President from 2024-2025; and Rene Petersen, professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Copenhagen University Hospital in Rigshospitalet, about advancements in thoracic surgery.
They explored the history of thoracic surgery, the ongoing development within the field, interspecialty support, and the rise of complex treatments. They also discussed the future of thoracic surgery, focusing on technical improvements, disease management approaches, evolving training, and the importance of prioritizing the best patient outcomes.
