General and Thoracic Surgery Online Training for Developing Countries

Surgical training in developing countries has traditionally required months and years of clinical and operative teaching by local and visiting first world faculty. This video describes an online simulation surgery course that teaches ten general and thoracic surgical procedures commonly encountered in developing countries. The teaching models are made from readily available and inexpensive supplies, such as locally available goat upper abdominal and mediastinal tissue. Video commentary is included with each procedure. This online course was developed by first world and local university surgical faculty who worked together in Rwanda.

This video introduces the viewer to the online course. The purpose of the course is to accelerate surgical skill acquisition prior to on-site surgical simulation workshops and/or clinical operations performed by the local faculty in collaboration with visiting first world surgeons.
