This interview centers on a research paper titled “Mortality Risk and Cause of Death Associated With Removal of the Adult Thymus: Analysis of the U.S. Thymoma Population.” At the 2026 American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Annual Meeting, CTSNet JANS Editor Mujtaba Mubashir, a cardiothoracic fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA, USA, spoke with Benjamin Resio, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, to discuss this important topic.

During their conversation, they explored the motivation behind the paper, the study’s methodology—including the databases utilized—and the key findings. They also addressed future research directions, such as evaluating longer-term outcomes, and discussed how clinical practices often leads to the most impactful research questions. Finally, they examined the challenges of balancing research with a demanding surgical practice, and Dr. Resio shared advice for those transitioning into an attending role.

At the 106th American Association for Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting, surgeons gathered from around the word to discuss essential topics in cardiothoracic surgery. Interviews with leading surgeons addressing these critical issues were captured, and more interviews from the meeting will be available in the coming weeks.
